This set is simply awesome. The historical value alone makes it completely worthwhile for any Elgar fan. But the sound quality is excellent on most of this, which stunned me. The Symphony No.2, recorded in the late 1920s, sounds like a mono recording from the 50s! In many ways - as the liner notes point out - much of what is here is a miracle of survival. You get to hear Elgar direct a portion of a rehearsal. The Symphonies are great interpretations. The orchestras sound far better than you would think for a period known for laxity in intonation. They play for the master, they play well! Worth every penny for any Elgar fan, or historical recording junkie, or even the casual historian who likes to feel a link to the past. Also, you upcoming digital remaster folks - this is how it should be done! Highly recommended!
